Winter is Almost Over? Sale Just Started!

January 18th, 2010

Yesterday I was at this local shopping center which has just about 10 outlet stores, and surprisingly, I found great deals going on in almost every one of the stores.

At Ann Taylor, I saw the nice coat I bought 2 months ago now selling for 80% off at $59 (too bad I bought it at $119)! Winter slippers for $3.50 at PacSun outlet storeAt Eddie Bauer, I saw many good quality sweaters selling for $15, and men’s goose down jackets for $39.99! At this price, I was seriously thinking about buying some and reselling them after 9 months! Then at Pac Sun I saw these great $12 winter slippers selling for $3.50, and I couldn’t resist to buy 2 pairs. When I arrived home I gave one pair to my mom and kept one pair myself, $7 well spent!

Top 10 Black Friday Shopping Tips

November 22nd, 2009

1. Look at Online Buying Guides first
For those of you who already have your desired items in mind (TV, Laptop, Camera, Printer, GPS, Vacuum Machine, etc), there are existing Black Friday buying guides for each popular category, so that you only need to do minimal research.

2.    Start your Black Friday on Thursday
A lot of the big stores will have most of their Black Friday sales online from Thursday, until the following Monday. Avoid the crowd by shopping Black Friday Deals Online.

3.    Plan Ahead, Know Your Stores
Go to the stores on Wednesday (many are closed on Thursday) and make sure you know where the sections you’ll need are located.  This will ensure you to grab the best deals within minimal time.

Different stores have different opening times. Make sure you have a clear plan on which one to go first, second, and third, etc…

4.    Do Price Comparison Online Before You Go
Sometimes you will be spending the whole Black Friday morning buying things you thought are cheap, only to find that they are actually cheaper online.  Do the price research online first before you go.

5.    Bring the Black Friday Ads
Be sure to have the Black Friday ads on hand.  It’s not only for your own reference; many stores have price match policy, so you can show them the exact product in other stores which could be being advertised for less.

6.    Free After Rebate Items
There are a lot of Free After Rebate Items during Black Friday Sale. However, do remember to submit the rebates on time, and also keep a copy of the rebate form in case your rebate mail gets lost.
7.    Go to the Less Crowded Store
It may take you longer to drive to a store which is further away and located in a less populated city, but that extra drive might worth it — you will find less people in the store and have better chance to get that hot item you want.
8.     Bring Someone Along with You
Remember that long checkout line? It would be nice if someone comes along with you and start in that line while you are in the store fetching things….
9.    Go For the Less Popular Items First
This one might surprise a lot of you, but sometimes you should go for the less popular items first! If you get into the store very late and don’t feel you have a good chance of getting the really hot items, change your strategy and go for the less popular items first.

10.    Use the Credit Card with Best Protection
You never know what will happen to your Black Friday purchase. Always use the credit card with the best Warranty Coverage, return protection, and sale price protection — Some of the credit card companies will offer this protection and refund you the difference if a product you buy is marked down further than the price you paid within a certain time frame (usually 60 days).

Get Your Passport/Visa Photos For FREE

October 21st, 2009

Traveling out of the country soon?  Still hasn’t gotten your passport photo yet?  Let me share a tip for you: you can get your passport photo at home for FREE!  There is a decent website which I would recommend: www.epassportphoto.com.  There are have more detailed instructions at their site but here is what I have done:

1. Have your picture taken at home against a white wall.

2. Upload the picture to www.epassportphoto.com and their software will help you to easily adjust the picture for free.  After the adjustment, you will have one photo image with 5 passport photo sized pictures in it (it should have been 6 but epassportphoto used up one slot for their own ad :-)

3. Print your picture at home if you have a photo printer.  If not, you can always upload it online at snapfish.com or walgreens.com and have it printed out for less than $0.20.

I did this and it worked great for me! You do this once and now you will have unlimited passport/visa photos at hand!

Advice for New Moms (Part III: When Your Baby is Between 0 and 1 Year)

April 11th, 2009

For me, the first month after my baby was born was one of the most frustrating periods of my whole life –  the first two days my baby cried so hard day and night;  she had diaper rash which looked so scary; she throws up every now and then even after we burp her for every ounce of milk she drinks, and sometimes the milk just shoot out from her nose; even her poop frequently changes color and smells extremely unusual…

Of course, now that when I look back, most of things happened to my baby are common and most of them were self-healing— my baby stopped crying on the 3rd day once my milk was let down and she had enough milk to drink;  diaper rash was mostly cured by the diaper rash cream; the strange pop color/smell was perfectly normal; she gradually stopped throwing up at about 3 months, when her digestion system became more developed …  All the extra stress was there just because I was a new mom!

After the first toughest month, I gradually became much more confident, after learning to seek advices from various sources: friends, doctor, google search, baby forums, weekly e-mail from babycenter.com, and books.  I check my weekly e-mails from BabyCenter.com every day, so that I know about my baby’s expected behaviors for the current weeks; I learnt to read the book “What To Expect the first yearwhen I am not sure about something with my daughter; I succesfully made my daughter sleep over night after following suggestion from book ”On Becoming Baby Wise“. I learnt to read Amazon product reviews, ask questios in the baby forums when I need to buy some products for my daughter…. Life just became so much easier!

Here, I would like to share with you the things I would recommend buying during baby’s first year.  The product picks reflect many hours of my own research and also many of my friends’  inputs. Hope this would help your life easier, too!

Advice for New Moms (Part I: When You First Know About Your Pregnacy)

March 16th, 2009

1. If you haven’t decided on the name on your precious one yet,  maybe it’s time to look at some baby naming site. Of all the websites that I have used, I like BabyNamesWorld the best because it contains most complete features such as search names by meaning.

2. If you haven’t done it already, register on babycenter.com.  By providing your expected due date, you will receive personalized information/advices about your pregancy and about your baby week by week, right when the right time you need it.  And trust me: after your baby is born, you will be more eager to see these weekly information!

3. Your doctor probably already told you to buy the prenatal vitamins.  Personally I would recommend buying the Nature Made Multi Prenatal from Costco — $13 lasted me the entire 8 months.

4. Don’t buy expensive maternity clothes.  You will out grow them very fast.  I like to shop my maternity clothes at Target.  They are cheap, reasonably high-quality, and very practical.

5. Register to get FREE baby product samples.  I have received free diaper samples/coupons, free baby formula, free baby lotion, shampoo, pacifier…. you name it.  You would appreciate me more if you know that even if you won’t ever use the free coupons, you can sell them on ebay.

To receive free Diapers Coupon/Samples,

Sign up For Pampers
Sign up For Huggies

To receive Free Formula Checks / Free small can of formula (very handy for the new born even if you plan to breastfeed)
Sign up For Similac
Sign up For Enfamil
Sign up For Good Start

Other than the websites, there are also a lot of chain stores which you can register and receive free gifts, such as Babies R Us and Motherhood Maternity.  Next time when you do the shopping, don’t hesitate to ask your local stores if they offer a free baby welcome package :-)

Spending a few minutes on online coupon search may save you hundreds

March 2nd, 2009

Personally I am too lazy to collect coupons which are less than $1 in value. However, there are times you might want to buy something big and then the coupon can save you a lot of money, and all you need to do is a few clicks :-)

Example:
Last year we were remodeling our house and wanted to buy the pergo from homedepot. It costs about $2000+. I took a few minutes and entered “home depot coupon” at ebay.com, boom there are so many of them with 10% off! $7 saved me $200 right there!

There are so many kinds of coupons you can buy online, too! Homedepot and Lowes coupons are just some of the popular ones. There are also baby formula coupons, diaper coupons, hotel coupons, ski coupons, Disneyland tickets, you name it.  So start happy coupon searching now!
