Great Children’s Books, Part 3: Books for Beginning Readers

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

In case you missed them, you’ll want to check out the other posts in this series which offer suggestion for books to read to babies and books to read to young children.

And now…join me as I tell you about another of my very favorite reading times with my children:  The time that the light bulb goes on and the children become readers themselves!!

It is a lovely feeling to realize that your child is now a reader!  For some kids, it happens early and easily…for others, it takes several years before everything “clicks” and they find success with reading.

(As a side note, I have found that Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is a wonderful resource to help teach your child the basics of reading.)

Once your child has the knack of sounding out words and knows the basics, there are some really fun books out there that they will love!  The following books are wonderful for beginning readers; they are easy to read and include fun and entertaining stories!

Dr. Seuss’s books are often non-sensical in nature, making kids giggle while they read through all the unlikely adventures.  Remember Thing One and Thing Two?!  How about Sam I Am?  :)

The Frog and Toad books might be my favorite of all.  Frog and Toad are great friends who think very differently from one another.  Silly misunderstandings and goofy circumstances make these books intriguing to your child, yet the words are basic and the stories are simple.

Ah, Nate the Great.  He’s a boy detective who has to solve mysteries in his neighborhood.  He also happens to just love pancakes and will eat them with no limit!

Amelia Bedelia is as silly as they come.  She’s a housekeeper who “draws the drapes” and “dresses the chicken” literally when given the task!  Be careful what you ask Amelia Bedelia to do…she will take your request quite seriously!

Great Children’s Books, Part 2: Books for Young Children

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Very rare is the child who does not enjoy having books read aloud to them.  My kids, especially my littlest guys all beg for me to read story after story to them.  Some of their favorites became memorized by the time they were three or four.  They excitedly spew out the words of the story faster than you can read them and look out if you happen to accidentally skip a page!  Your child will let you know about it!

Cuddling up to read with your preschoolers and tots may be the only time of day they are actually quiet, still and well…quiet and still.  Take advantage of those moments and pull out some books!

Here are a few of our favorites for ages 2-7 (and beyond!):
