Now as for the game, it's absolutely fantastic. I bought it expecting a mediocre game that I could waste a couple of hours on and was surprised by what I actually purchased. The combat is tense and fun, and more brutal than expected. It's not easy and it's not ridiculously difficult. Not once did I get bored fighting the same encounter or boss over and over. In terms of platforming, there are some annoying mishaps but when it works, it works well. Using your accumulated abilities to traverse the world feels good and solid, allowing for enjoyable exploration and the uncovering of cool secrets. The exploration is great and has consumed hours of my playthrough. Areas feel different enough and challenge the player when they explore, often resulting in a useful material, item or spell. In my opinion, however, they should not have used the DS2 method of opening secret walls. Unlike other metroidvanias you have to press the action button near a secret wall instead of hitting it, and I found no explanation about this other than a secret wall confirmed by another player's online message. The checkpoint, or sanctuary, mechanic provides some cool customisation to your multiple bases, which now feel like real places instead of just dull respawn points. You can choose whether to have someone to enable fast travel, smiting, a merchant or even a co-op buddy, resulting in some fun but still important decisions. The crown jewel of the game is definitely its atmosphere. The horrific creatures and locations provide fantastic aesthetic elements to each area and made all the other aspects of the game super enjoyable to play through.
Overall I would really recommend Souls fans and metroidvania fans to buy this and give it a go.
The extra goodies included are definitely a welcome add-on and not disappointing in the least when you consider the price point of $30. The poster/map is fairly small but the map is very useful as there is no map in-game. The game manual is excellent and I wish more games still had these included.
The game is very good. Think of it as a baby between Dead Cells and Dark Souls. It’s a Souls-like game but in 2D and some stuff like wall jumping similar to Dead Cells. Unlike Dead Cells though, it’s not a rogue lite, it’s just a normal game. The replacement for bonfires are Sanctuaries, and the replacement for souls is salt.
It feels like a very well balanced game and is extremely challenging when you start. After a few hours and getting the hang of controls it starts getting slightly easier.
So far I’ve had some frame rate issues. Nothing game breaking but at random times the game drops to probably 20 FPS or so. This is a little disappointing so I’m knocking one star off for that given it’s a 2D platformer (albeit a pretty one) and shouldn’t have these kinds of issues on the Switch
UPDATE 01/16/2019:
The more I play this game, the more I like it, so despite the frame rate issues I've upped the review to a 5/5. Up to almost 20 hours now and it has been a memorable gaming experience so far. I plan to play in NG+. I've also realized that it has many Castlevania elements. It's a lot more platforming focused than I thought. I can't recommend this game enough.
This game has no extra DLC so this special edition doesn't bundle content, which is typical for editions like this. It has a soundtrack, which is great. However I always seem to get more than enough of a soundtrack of a game by playing it.
I'm still waiting for a new Castlevania. Until then, this moody and unique indie title certainly helps feel that void, and again, the co-op on the switch is the real selling point to me. Very few Metroidvania or Souls-like games include local co-op.
