Overview

Starting at $25,655 (which includes a destination charge of $975), this popular compact crossover SUV is known for its comfortable cabin, multiple standard safety features and 70-cubic feet of cargo space. Engine power and handling characteristics are not among class leaders, however, the Rogue’s upgradeable packages in premium trims make it a worthy consideration for commuters, small families or those who would like some extra storage space.

While the namesake suggests a rebellious attitude, the 2018 Nissan Rogue is rather tame. Starting at $25,655 (which includes a destination charge of $975), this popular compact crossover SUV has a comfortable cabin, multiple standard safety features, and 70 cubic feet of cargo space. The engine's power and its handling characteristics are not among class leaders, but the Rogue’s upgradeable packages and premium trims make it a worthy consideration for commuters, small families, or those who would like some extra storage space.

What's New for 2018

The addition of a semi-autonomous feature called ProPilot Assist leads the minor changes to the 2018 Nissan Rogue. Available in the SL Premium Package, this system is designed to brake, accelerate, and steer the vehicle during single-lane highway driving. Nissan has deleted third-row seating for 2018 – relax, it wasn't terribly useful to begin with – but takes care of all Rogue customers by adding Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an additional USB port, and blind spot monitoring on base trims and above.

Choosing Your Nissan Rogue

The 2018 Nissan Rogue is available in three trim levels – base S, SV, and SV. Each Rogue is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 170 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. A continuously variable transmission is standard on all trims, and consumers can opt for all-wheel drive for an additional $1,350. The EPA-estimated fuel economy for this powerplant is 26 miles per gallon city, and 33 mpg highway in front-wheel drive, and drops one mpg in each category with all-wheel drive, which is on par with competitors in this category.

Nissan Rogue

S

Starting at $25,655, the 2018 Nissan Rogue S seats five passengers, rides on 17-inch steel wheels, and includes LED daytime running and taillights. The S also comes with several standard safety features including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert and automatic emergency braking system. Consumers can choose between five exterior colors, but only one interior pattern.

A seven-inch touchscreen display is standard with two USB ports, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The S also includes SiriusXM satellite radio with a three-month subscription, Bluetooth, a hands-free mobile and text assist feature, and a rearview camera. Rear passenger air conditioning vents, a tilt and telescoping steering column, and three 12-volt DC power outlets are available throughout the cabin. There are no optional extras for the Rogue S.

Nissan Rogue

SV

Jumping up in class, the SV trim begins at $26,995 and offers multiple package offerings that allow consumers to spice up their Rogue. The SV includes all the features of the base and adds dual-zone climate control, a motion-activated liftgate, and 17-inch aluminum wheels in place of the base model's steelies. Automatic headlights, a push-button and remote start, heated front seats, and an eight-way power driver’s seat are also standard features included on this trim level.

The standard stereo and infotainment system is upgraded with two more speakers, while a Bose audio system with nine speakers and dual subwoofers is part of the SV Sun and Sound Touring Package. This package also includes a power moonroof and is available for an additional $3,220. But in order to grab the upgraded stereo, you'll also need the SV Premium Package, a $1,490 grouping that adds adaptive cruise control, navigation, a 360-degree camera, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lights, and driver’s seat memory settings.

The SV is also available with a $1,095 Midnight Edition package. This style kit adds black wheels, black and chrome exterior accents, and Midnight Edition badging. Consumers can choose between Magnetic Black, Gun Metallic or Pearl White as the exterior color, while the charcoal cloth is the only interior choice.

Nissan Rogue

SL

The premium SL closes out the 2018 Nissan Rogue range and begins at $32,155. The SL includes all the features of the SV, and adds the premium traffic and navigation system, pedestrian detection for the automatic emergency braking system, and leather-appointed seats. The SL stands on 18-inch wheels, has roof rails installed, and offers adaptive cruise control. The leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and the Bose premium audio system are also standard features on the SL. This trim is available in eight exterior colors and three interior patterns.

For an additional $1,820, consumers can add the SL premium package that includes a power moonroof and LED headlights. The SL Platinum Package adds $790 to the price tag, but is the only way into Nissan's new ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous system. It also adds 19-inch wheels. Finally, the SL Platinum Reserve Interior Package adds tan leather seats that have quilted leather inserts and black interior door enhancements for $250.

CarsDirect Tip

For the money, the SV trim with the added premium package, and all-wheel drive is a smart buy for under $30,000. This package includes a surround-view camera, a navigation system, and the power liftgate. However, if towing capability is important, a larger SUV with a V6 engine should be considered.

Five years into its current generation, the 2018 Nissan Rogue, the brand's top-selling model, features a smooth ride, great interior space, and lots of advanced safety features. But its design is generic, the transmission drones, and performance is less than thrilling, while the base model looks and feels low-rent.

Best Value

Pricing for the 2018 Rogue starts at $25,775 for a front-wheel-drive S model and runs up to $36,760 for a fully-optioned, all-wheel-drive SL in available Pearl White. In all, buyers have a choice of three trims (S, SV, and SL), with a single engine/transmission combo (170-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired to a CVT automatic), in either front wheel- or all-wheel drive.

Even the base S comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto capability, a rearview camera, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. However, we'd skip the S and choose the mid-range SV that adds such niceties as 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats (power driver's seat), steering-wheel-mounted audio and Bluetooth controls, power heated outside mirrors, rear privacy glass, roof rails, and a motion-activated liftgate.

Here's how we'd build it:

  • Model: 2018 Nissan Rogue SV
  • Engine: 2.5-liter four-cylinder
  • Output: 170 hp / 175 lb-ft
  • Transmission:CVT automatic
  • Drivetrain: Front-wheel drive
  • MPG: 26 City / 33 Hwy
  • Options: SV Premium Package ($1,490, navigation with voice recognition, Sirius XM Traffic and Travel Link, adaptive cruise control, an around-view monitor, a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lights).
  • Base Price: $26,995 (including a $975 destination charge)
  • Best Value Price:$28,485

Performance

Nissan Rogue

The Rogue's 106.5-inch wheelbase translates to a composed and comfortable ride over most road surfaces, and the engine delivers good off-the-line acceleration. Available AWD and 8.4 inches of ground clearance make it a good winter hauler. Nissan's ProPilot Assist technology that, in certain situations, can automatically accelerate, brake, and maintain a set distance from other vehicles – without driver intervention – is a new option on the SL trim.

On the flip side, neither a manual transmission nor a turbocharged engine is offered. More importantly, the CVT keeps the engine revving loudly on hard acceleration because – unlike the Subaru Forester – it lacks paddle shifters and fixed ratio points that offer a more predictable throttle response.

Style

The Rogue's fresh styling is wrapped around a handsome, carefully-assembled cabin that features supportive front seats and enough room in back for three adults to stretch out. For 2018, it loses a cramped third row that won't be missed, which also increases cargo volume behind the back seat from 30 to 39 cubic feet.

At the same time, the Rogue's styling doesn't stand out in a crowd of like-sized crossovers. Plastic hubcaps, cheap interior trim, and the lack of tinted windows give the S model a low-rent look and feel.

The Best and Worst Things

The Rogue's good use of space and abundant standard safety technologies are enticing, but the near-constant droning of the CVT is the exclamation point to the Rogue's mediocre fun-to-drive character.

Right For? Wrong For?

Nissan Rogue

A wide range of standard and available safety technologies should appeal to safety-focused buyers.

A lack of power with a droning CVT added to the mix will likely keep enthusiasts at bay.

The Bottom Line

While it's hardly exciting to drive, a smooth ride, comfortable interior with great cargo space, and a wide range of advanced safety features make the 2018 Nissan Rogue a solid choice in the compact crossover class.
