All-Round Hard Shell Review

Arc'teryx Beta AR Key Specifications
Reference Price $650
Fabric Thickness 80D & 100D (Higher D-rating means more abrasion-resistant)
Waterproof Technology 3L Gore-Tex Pro ePE (Eco-friendly new membrane)
Weight 15.6 oz (Men's size M)
  • Superior Protection: Features 80D main body + 100D reinforced areas (shoulders and hood) for exceptional durability.
  • Versatile Design: DropHood with separate collar provides better wind protection for the neck when not wearing the hood.
  • Perfect Details: Extremely spacious hand pockets allow easy access even when wearing a backpack, with consistently high-quality craftsmanship.
  • Eco-Friendly Upgrade: Uses PFAS-free (fluorine-free surfactants) DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment.
  • Average Breathability: Common issue with professional hardshells; can feel stuffy during high-intensity activities (use pit zips for ventilation).
  • Length Limitation: For dedicated skiers, the back length is slightly short, which may allow snow accumulation in deep powder.
  • Only Drawback is Price: The $650 price tag is indeed substantial; recommended to purchase during major sales.

: Of course it's all-purpose! You can even wear it for mountain blasting! No other brand definitely has this capability!

: As an enthusiast of mountaineering (at least twice a year) and skiing (at least four times a year), Columbia absolutely outperforms Arcteryx. Columbia offers a wide selection, strong functionality, and a complete range of sizes, all at reasonable prices. However, if you care about showing off in terms of money and brand, that's another story.

: Ever since I saw the news about the bombing, I've been wanting to tear off the Arc'teryx logo from my clothes at home... Wearing it out with the logo on feels so embarrassing...

: On the snowy mountain, wearing a white windbreaker—is this to avoid being spotted by others?

: Bought it at 20% off. A bit pricey. Really like it and it works great. It's just that I've lost weight now, so it fits oversized, which actually looks really good too.

: There's one thing I really don't like about BR: its hood is designed to fit over a helmet, so it's particularly large and always falls down, covering my eyes. I always have to wear a hat underneath to feel comfortable. Also, I recommend buying a size larger. You usually need to wear one or two layers of thermal clothing underneath. If you don't pay attention when trying it on, once you put on thermal layers for hiking, it suddenly feels very tight, especially in the armpit area.
