The hardware itself is actually quite nice and a good value. The loss in value due to the difficulty involved with setting up a fresh operating system using the documentation supplied in the box. I should also note that I was looking for a desktop-like machine to act as a media server and web server running Windows. The instructions mention going to a URL on the HP site and downloading an spp package to try to get things started. However, the URL requires that you be logged in, and once you are inside you have to link your license to your account in order to download the package, but there is no clear indication of which IDs are necessary to do that linking. I consider myself a tech savvy individual and quite good at setting up computers and installing software. I literally spent the majority of an entire weekend scouring the internet and trying to find all the necessary steps and software required to just load Windows onto this thing. Ultimately, if you've worked with HP servers like this before or you have copious free time that you are willing to spend on trying to figure out the mysteries of this device, you are better off spending a little bit more money on a machine that has a better track record for installation and configuration. Had I known the headaches I would go through in advance, I never would have made this purchase. Also, as a tip, do not try replacing the RAM on this box. It may not boot if you do.Read full review

Overall not bad. HP made the initial setup unnecessarily difficult and I am fairly tech savvy. Overall for what I paid it was a good deal, but at normal retail I would not recommend this server class tower. I am using this as a workstation and not as a server, for that it works great. I have a Lenovo server TS140 and that is a true work horse, don't think this would hold up as all with minimal errors as the Lenovo.

I am using this as a domain controller Windows Server 2016 and Exchange 2016 server. It has been working just fine. The RAID controller is nice to have also.

Everything worked right out of the box. Setup Vmware ESX 6.0 with no issues. Win Server VM humming right along no issues. Dropped in 2 1tb drives and configured sata controller for compatibility with ESX, works great. Outside of DOA issues which can happen for different reasons, if you dont have experience with enterprise machines this is really not going to be the equipment for you. Dont buy this expecting to throw Windows 7 on it and run it like a desktop.

I have this as my media PC in my living room. I added a GTX 1050 Ti so I would have an HDMI out connection. There are many upsides to this server. Its well built. Has enough room in the case. It's easy to work on. At first I was worried about the noise being that it is a server but; The fan is surprisingly quite. Another upside is that it ships with 1 stick of 8gb ECC so going to 32gb is somewhat cheaper. The processor is a little weak as well. Its quick but not lighting fast. You can always do what I did and upgrade it to the one mentioned in the quick spec manual on HPE's website. Back in 2014 / 2015 (When this unit was new).
