Editor's Pick: Dorm mattresses are provided by the school, and after long use they never feel clean. Laying one of these on top gives much more peace of mind. It has a waterproof layer in the middle, so if you occasionally spill a drink or accidentally knock over a water cup, just wipe it clean and it won't soak through. The four-layer construction doesn't feel stuffy to sleep on, and there's none of that crinkly plastic noise. The fitted-sheet style has elastic all around, so it stays in place even on a 22-inch (56 cm) thick mattress, and it recovers after machine washing and low-temperature tumble drying, making changing and washing a breeze.
