iOS 27 brings GymKit support to iPhone and AirPods

Since its release in October 2017, GymKit has been slow to catch on due to its high barrier to entry. With the iOS 27 update, Apple has broken Apple Watch's feature monopoly, allowing iPhone and AirPods to also achieve a digital closed loop for the fitness experience.

🔹 How the iPhone and AirPods combo fits into GymKit

Under iOS 27, the connection process is similar to using Apple Pay: simply hold your iPhone near the NFC sensor point on a compatible machine to start data syncing. AirPods Pro 3 handles real-time heart rate monitoring, while the iPhone serves as the big screen and recorder.

🔹 What it replaces, and what limitations remain

This feature is an excellent fallback for when you forget your watch or worry about charging. It currently supports treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and stair climbers. But keep these hard requirements in mind:

  • System requirement: Your phone must be upgraded to iOS 27.
  • Hardware pairing: It must be used with AirPods Pro 3, otherwise some machines will automatically disconnect.
  • Environment dependency: Gym equipment still needs to be pre-installed with the GymKit protocol; older third-party devices cannot connect directly.

Although iPhone + AirPods offers more options, Apple Watch remains the flagship choice for fitness enthusiasts thanks to its all-day data analysis and exceptional portability.
