OpenAI launches SMS feature, AI agents become personal assistants
OpenAI has finally delivered on its promise from late September. US Pro users can now text the Dot agent directly—no need to open a separate app, it's as easy as chatting with a friend. Dot is the personal AI agent OpenAI launched on September 29, available 24/7, able to take on tasks, and remember your preferences. Now with an added texting channel, it turns "open ChatGPT and type" into "just send a quick text."
🔹 This feature supports iMessage and RCS messaging.
The Dot agent's texting feature is in beta: use iMessage (iPhone) or RCS (Android) to send your Dot texts, photos, and voice memos, and it will proactively text you updates on task progress—for the first time, an AI assistant truly "lives in your text message list."
How to use it: In ChatGPT, open Dot's profile page and select Texting. On mobile, enable iMessage for iPhone or RCS for Android. Messaging support is provided by Linq, and the company says it has conducted "extensive" penetration testing.
▫️ Key highlights and setup process
- Multimodal interaction: Supports sending text, photos, and even voice memos.
- Proactive feedback: Dot will proactively report progress on tasks you've assigned via text.
- How to enable: Select Texting in your ChatGPT profile, and make sure iMessage or RCS is enabled on your phone.
