Android Auto 2026 Major Update: In-Car App Updates
As of May 2026, Google is preparing a major update for Android Auto. The key highlight is support for video apps running directly on the in-car infotainment screen, starting with YouTube and later introducing Netflix.
List of initially supported brands
▫️ BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Kia
▫️ Renault, Skoda, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz
🔹 Core Features and Limitations
- Scenario Restriction: Video playback is limited to when the vehicle is parked, suitable for downtime such as EV charging, waiting at school pickup, or parking lot waits.
- High Frame Rate Support: On hardware-compatible vehicles, YouTube supports playback up to 60fps for smooth video quality.
- Mandatory Safety Mechanism: When the system detects the vehicle is moving, the video screen will immediately shut off to reduce driving distractions.
🔹 About Safety Mode
Once the vehicle starts moving, supported apps can switch to audio-only mode, with the screen replaced by a static image. Note that background listening on YouTube typically requires a YouTube Premium subscription. With the free version, playback may completely stop when the vehicle is in motion.
This feature is expected to roll out gradually throughout 2026. It offers Android car owners a new option for enjoying high-quality entertainment during parking breaks.
