However, the bell and basket tend to fall apart easily and the brakes aren't great, so keep durability in mind when buying.

Editor's Pick: When kids first learn to ride, the biggest worries are not being able to get on the seat and not being able to reach the brakes. This bike uses a low-step frame so little ones can just lift a leg and hop on, and the brake handles are sized for small hands so they're easy to squeeze. The 12 to 16 inch versions come with training wheels, so they can ride steady for a while and then take them off once their balance improves.
The seat adjusts as they grow, so it works from age three or four all the way into their teens. The shiny decals and bell on the frame make kids proud to show it off. About 90% of the parts come pre-assembled, so it's ready to ride after a few turns of a wrench, and letting your child help out is a nice confidence boost.
