Editor's Pick: The dorm mattress was hard as a board, and after putting this layer on, your shoulders and hips feel noticeably softer when you lie down. It's actually two layers — one layer of gel memory foam plus one quilted pillow-top layer — and you can use them stacked together or just one layer, depending on your preference. The elastic band around the bottom fits mattresses from 8 to 21 inches (20 to 53 cm) thick, so it won't shift much when you turn over. If the pillow-top layer gets dirty, just unzip it and machine wash it; don't put the memory foam layer in water.
