Editor's Pick: In 1946, Piaggio produced the world's first scooter—the Vespa. In 1952, Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck rode a Vespa through the streets of Rome in the movie "Roman Holiday," creating iconic scenes that helped promote nearly 5 million Vespas to over 130 countries and regions worldwide.
Vespa means "wasp" in Italian, named for its slender waist and flowing lines. The Vespa was invented to distance scooters from the traditional sporting competitions of motorcycles, creating instead a convenient transportation tool to ease daily commutes—something that stylish women like Hepburn could easily ride while wearing flowing dresses.
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Vespa brand, LEGO created this 18+ model using rare light blue LEGO bricks to represent this symbol of love and romance. This was also one of Vespa's original production colors.
Like the original, this buildable Vespa model features a front wheel mounted on one side, two seats, a removable engine cover with a brick-built engine underneath, a kickstand that can be folded, and handlebars that connect to the front wheel assembly.
Details include the Vespa logo, a classic 1960s Italian license plate, a spare tire, a helmet, and an accessory basket with a flower bouquet in the back.
The model includes 1,106 pieces and measures 8.7 inches (22 cm) high, 4.7 inches (12 cm) wide, and 13.8 inches (35 cm) long when built. Speaking of Italian style, the Fiat 500 (discontinued) must also be mentioned. When placed side by side, the Vespa in light blue appears much larger than the Fiat!
