My biggest realization is that all the sellers are basically the same people from Taobao, and there are huge differences between Chinese and American attitudes toward shopping. For example, I recently got a damaged product. I submitted evidence and waited a few days for the review. Out of a sense of responsibility, I also contacted the seller directly to explain why I wanted a return. To my surprise, the seller arrogantly claimed that returning products is a bad American habit—even though the listing says free returns, they don't actually agree with that policy. “We don't do returns in our store. Do you know how expensive international shipping is? And that I’ll have to pay extra to get it back to the warehouse? It’s normal for made-in-China products to arrive damaged.” Regardless, if you want to make dollars on this platform, the bare minimum is to follow its rules—that’s basic contract integrity.
