2028 Volvo XC40 Officially Announced for North America, Entry-Level Electric EX40 to Be Discontinued

Attention anyone looking to get into an entry-level luxury SUV! The Volvo best-seller XC40 is getting a major refresh. The 2028 XC40 is expected to arrive at North American dealer showrooms early next year (2027), with significant upgrades in design, smart interaction, and safety hardware.

🔹 Looks upgraded again

The classic "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights have sharper lines. The front grille, bumper, and hood feature all-new styling, giving the front end a more modern look. In addition, new 18- to 20-inch diamond-cut wheels are available as options.

🔹 Core smart interaction upgrade

The cabin now features an 11.2-inch high-definition center touchscreen, angled slightly toward the driver. The key upgrade is the integration of the Google Gemini AI assistant, which supports more natural voice interaction and can help plan complex routes, navigate around traffic jams, and manage personal messages.

For interior materials, the use of piano black plastic has been reduced, and the air vents are now made with soft-touch materials. The new model also adds Arianne Cardamom leather seats and brown walnut wood trim as options.

🔹 Expanded sensor hardware

The new model upgrades its sensor array, including updated radar, a front-view camera, and 12 all-new ultrasonic sensors. This makes features like Pilot Assist driver assistance and automatic emergency braking run more smoothly and precisely.

🔹 Powertrain and lineup adjustments

The company says that after the entry-level all-electric EX40 is discontinued, its spot will eventually be filled by the EX50, built on the SPA3 platform. Volvo's current U.S. electric lineup still includes the EX30, EC40, EX60, and EX90.
