Tesla's First Cybercab Officially Rolls Off Production Line at Texas Gigafactory
February 18, 2026, Tesla announced the official production of the first Cybercab at their Texas Gigafactory. CEO Elon Musk congratulated the team via X platform, marking a production milestone for this autonomous taxi project.
The Cybercab features a two-door design that completely eliminates the steering wheel and pedals, aimed at achieving fully autonomous driving. Compared to the 2025 Model Y that primarily relied on safety operators for monitoring, the Cybercab represents a more pure direction in self-driving technology.

Although the vehicle has rolled off the production line, regulatory compliance for road use remains challenging. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) currently presupposes human-controlled systems. If Tesla cannot meet these requirements, they'll need special approval from regulatory agencies. For reference, Zoox has already obtained such federal exemptions.
During the 2024 earnings call, Musk stated that this design aims to be the "optimal fit" for autonomous driving. He revealed that consumers will be able to purchase the vehicle individually in the future, but will face varying regulatory restrictions across states regarding registration, insurance, and autonomous operation.
