Recently, there has been a flurry of activity with Chinese AAA game titles. The "second graduate from the village" Phantom Blade Zero released a ray-tracing demo, the Torch Dragon team unveiled a new trailer for their Gujian series, and the highlight of Gamescom was Game Science's second installment in the Black Myth series—Black Myth: Zhong Kui. At today's Gamescom opening night, Game Science officially revealed their new game "Black Myth: Zhong Kui"!

Developed by Game Science, the second installment in the Black Myth series, "Black Myth: Zhong Kui," officially revealed its first CG teaser trailer today, which also debuted at the Gamescom 2025 pre-show event.
This title is a single-player action RPG primarily inspired by "Zhong Kui," a famous character from Chinese folklore. As it is still in early development, there is no in-game footage available yet.
- Phantom Blade Zero Releases Ray-Tracing Demo
In late July, Phantom Blade Zero held a two-day offline demo event in Beijing. The demo offered an easy difficulty option, 8 weapons, 5 Phantom Armaments, and was livestreamed throughout. Many players who completed the demo expressed their satisfaction. IGN exclusively released a 22-minute gameplay demonstration featuring a skilled player that was quite entertaining to watch.
Today, NVIDIA released a ray-tracing demo video for Phantom Blade Zero, announcing that the game will support ray tracing and DLSS 4 frame generation at launch. The video, titled "Return to Pang Town," showcases what will be a core area in the game, combining concepts from previous titles, real-world scanning, and new graphical technologies. The producer commented: "Released before Gamescom to build some excitement." The video continues the fast-paced combat style shown in previous promotions, even hiding an execution move at the 3-minute mark. A brand new trailer will be released at the upcoming Future Games Show in a few days. Currently, it's known that the game's release date will be announced sometime in 2025, with Gamescom and The Game Awards being the two most likely venues for the announcement.
- First Trailer for New Gujian Game "Gu Jian" Revealed
A few days ago, Shanghai Torch Dragon, the development team behind the Gujian Qitan series, released the first trailer for their new single-player game simply titled "Gu Jian." The game is being developed on Unreal Engine 5 and combines ancient Chinese mythology with supernatural tales. The gameplay footage revealed combat scenes and parts of the weapon and item systems, while also subtly distancing itself from Souls-like games. The video ended with the summoning of a familiar "ox-horse" creature for battle, which will likely be one of the game's standout characters.
With so many major game announcements, internet users have jokingly brought up Tencent's nickname as the "angel investor" of Chinese AAA games. It seems that games where Tencent invests but doesn't interfere with development tend to turn out quite promising.

The overall environment is dominated by fast-food-style short videos and a pursuit of quick, instant gratification. Even long-form videos struggle to retain viewers, let alone those who have the capacity to engage with lengthy books or complex, story-driven games. Gaming companies, especially publicly listed ones, are under pressure to meet revenue and performance targets. They won’t invest effort into something that doesn’t yield clear returns. To excel in storytelling, aside from other conditions, a certain degree of idealism is truly necessary. Take Genshin Impact, for example. To fully understand its storyline, one almost has to take notes. Very few people are willing to do that. 补充一下,有时候也怨不得这些游戏公司。大环境就是快餐短视频,寻求短平快的刺激,连看长视频的人都不多,更不要说有能力看长篇书籍和长篇复杂游戏剧情的。游戏公司,尤其上市公司,哪个都是有营收业绩压力的,不会做这种费力不讨好的事。能做好剧情的除了其它条件,还真要有些理想主义才行。 就拿原神来说,想理解剧情必须得做笔记。没几个人会这么干。

In contrast, the narrative demands for Souls-like RPGs are relatively lower. These companies, unable to craft compelling stories, have taken this route instead. With Unreal Engine 5 handling the visuals, they just need to make the monsters more challenging, and the job is done. 搞出顶级RPG那种剧情,并且和游戏本身其它元素有机结合,是需要极高水平和大量投入的,只有顶级制作商才能做出来。类魂rpg游戏的剧情相对要求小很多。这些公司编不出故事来,就走这条路子了。反正画面有虚幻5,把怪搞难点,就完活。

You can ascend to the Heavenly Palace, journey to the Western Paradise, descend to the Underworld, assist the Thunder Department with the Yue Pengju side quest, and help the Tortoise and Snake Generals capture demons. 不啊,像GTA那样的开放沙盒任务模式。可以上天宫,可以去西天,下冥府,帮雷部完成岳鹏举支线,帮龟蛇二将捉妖
