Apple's newly upgraded M5 chip takes performance to a new level while maintaining the ultra-thin design. Cellular models have also changed: they no longer use Qualcomm chips but are equipped with Apple's self-developed C1X modem, offering faster network speeds and lower power consumption.
According to official specifications, the new M5-powered iPad Pro delivers up to 3.5 times better AI performance than the previous M4 generation, mainly thanks to the new neural engine added to each GPU core. Storage is also faster and offers larger capacities. Apple states that the M5 MacBook Pro's SSD performance is twice that of the previous generation, with maximum optional storage capacity of 4TB, double the previous limit.
Compared to the previous M4 chip, the M5 offers substantial improvements:
- Approximately 15% increase in multi-core CPU performance;
- Up to 4x higher peak GPU computing performance;
- Overall graphics processing speed improved by about 45%;
- Memory bandwidth increased by 30%, reaching 153 GB/s.
- Up to 1.6x faster graphics performance in professional applications, and up to 1.6x higher frame rates in games
- 20% improvement in multi-threading performance
- Up to 1.8x faster AI video enhancement performance in Topaz Video
- Up to 1.7x faster 3D rendering performance in Blender
- Up to 1.6x higher frame rates in games
- Up to 1.2x faster build performance when compiling code in Xcode
In addition to the iPad Pro, Apple also updated the MacBook Pro and Vision Pro today, all equipped with the same M5 chip.
The C1X modem in the cellular iPad Pro models is also noteworthy—compared to previous generation models, cellular speeds are up to 50% faster while power consumption is reduced by 30%. This chip first appeared on the iPhone Air.
Additionally, all new iPad Pro models now come with Apple's N1 chip, which is specifically responsible for managing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread wireless communications. This small chip first debuted in the iPhone 17 series.
Those looking to purchase a MacBook Pro while also seeking maximum performance might want to wait for the upcoming M5 Pro and M5 Max versions.
