Tesla has officially launched the all-new Model Y L in the US and Puerto Rico, and orders are now open. As a long-wheelbase version of the Model Y, the biggest upgrade is the 2+2+2 six-seat layout, where the third row is no longer just for occasional use.

Launch Series Price Higher Than Expected

The US launch features the Launch Series edition, priced at $61,990.

This price is not only higher than the Model Y Performance ($57,990) but also well above the industry's earlier prediction of around $54,000. However, Tesla has previously followed a strategy of releasing a high-end Launch Series first, followed by more affordable versions, so a lower-priced model is still expected in the future.

Competitors Face Pressure

The three-row electric SUV market is becoming increasingly competitive:

Kia EV9: Starting at $54,900, with a maximum range of 304 miles;

Hyundai Ioniq 9: Starting at $58,955, with a maximum range of 335 miles.

In comparison, the Model Y L offers quicker acceleration and the advantages of the Tesla ecosystem, but its price is also at the higher end of the segment.

Is It Worth Buying?

For consumers who have always found the third row of the Model Y 7-seater too cramped, the Model Y L is the true "three-row Model Y." The extended wheelbase and six-seat layout significantly enhance the riding experience, and the 325-mile range keeps it competitive.

However, the $61,990 Launch Series price is undoubtedly the biggest point of contention. If the standard version can later drop to around $54,000, the Model Y L's market competitiveness will improve significantly.
