The best thing we can do is to delay its onset or keep our blood pressure under control within the range that's considered normal for our age—that's already a win. If you want to lower your blood pressure, reducing salt intake is absolutely crucial. Try to keep your daily salt consumption under 4g (for reference, if your family's cooking isn’t too salty, 4g is about the amount used for one meal; you’d need to skip salt in the other two meals, and avoid adding soy sauce when cooking). Also, be especially careful of "hidden salt"—foods like soy sauce, noodles, and even desserts (yes, salt is often used to enhance sweetness) are main sources of hidden sodium. If you can cut it down to 2g of salt per day, pair that with potassium intake, and drink 2-3 liters of water daily, you might see your blood pressure drop by at least 5mmHg, possibly even 10-15. For newly diagnosed hypertension, this could bring your BP right into target range. Even if you’ve had high blood pressure for years, it could allow you to reduce medication. In addition, aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week, control your daily calorie intake, and lose excess weight—do all that, and you might lower your BP by another 10mmHg or so. I'm not a specialist, but after turning 40, I was diagnosed with the 'three highs'—early high blood pressure (98-145), prediabetes, and high blood lipids, especially triglycerides, which were nearly four times above the normal level (super risky for acute pancreatitis!).
