: Every time there’s a drone post, I always say this: Make sure to research the laws, regulations, and local no-fly zones before buying. To keep it simple: 1. License requirements: FAA certifications come in two kinds—recreational (TRUST) and commercial (Part 107). Recreational flights just need to pass a super easy TRUST exam. It’s free, open-book, and you can finish it in just a few minutes. Once done, print out your certificate and carry it every time you fly. 2. Drone registration: If your drone (including everything on it) weighs over 250g—which this one does by a lot—you must register it with the FAA. Stick the registration number somewhere visible on the drone. When flying, make sure you comply with Remote ID requirements (DJI will auto-update this). If it’s under 250g (for example, the DJI Mini series with the extended battery), you don’t need to register. 3. No-fly zones: Always check if the spot you want to fly is allowed before taking off. I recommend using Air Control or AutoPylot to check, since there are sometimes temporary restricted areas. In general, you can’t fly in national parks, and the bigger parks usually have drone detectors. FYI, flying in some restricted zones can lead to more serious consequences than just fines or confiscation—there are tons of cases on YouTube. Never fly continuously over major roads, moving vehicles, or directly above people. Also, you must maintain visual line of sight on your drone at all times (having LEDs etc. still counts). The bigger the drone, the farther away you can see it and the farther you can legally fly.
