Apple has launched the new Apple Upgrade Plan in the U.S., a product rental service powered by Klarna. Now, U.S. customers can choose the Apple Upgrade monthly rental option when purchasing devices on the Apple Store website, in the Apple Store app, or at physical retail locations—instead of paying upfront or using traditional installment plans.

■ Total buyout price never exceeds the official retail price

Apple Upgrade offers rental terms of 12 to 36 months. The biggest highlight: if you decide to buy out the device at the end of your rental term, the total amount you pay (monthly payments + buyout fee) will be exactly equal to the product's original official retail price. In essence, this is a zero-interest, zero-fee installment plan in disguise.

■ Using the iPhone 17 Pro (256GB) as an example:

ItemAmount/Details
List Price$1,099
24-month rental payment$31.99/month
Total rental costApprox. $770
End-of-term buyout priceApprox. $330 (list price - rent already paid)

With this plan, customers can get the product with no down payment required.

⚠️ Things to consider

In our view, Apple Upgrade is best suited for those who upgrade on a fixed cycle, want to lower monthly cash pressure, and are comfortable with "renting rather than owning." For example, if you like to upgrade your iPhone or Apple Watch every year or every two years, this could feel like a smoother process.

But if you're the type to keep a device for three or four years, or you care more about eventual ownership, buying outright, using Apple Card installments, or carrier deals might still be a better fit. Would you be okay with leasing Apple devices like a car?

: What does this mean? We've finished paying in 12 installments, isn't the item ours? They want to take it back? I'm not quite sure.

: Probably because they're worried about sales dropping if they raise prices too much.

: Honestly, a lot of people are saying this is worse than the original upgrade plan because the phone isn't yours in the end and there's no Apple Care included. But for me, it actually feels way more worth it than the old plan. I never wanted Apple Care anyway—I just like switching to a new iPhone every so often, but I don't want to upgrade every single year, and I don't want to pay an extra $10 a month for Apple Care. With the old program, if I got an iPhone 17, I'd pay $42 a month, and even after upgrading a year later, I'd still be paying $42 a month. Now, with the two-year upgrade cycle, I only pay $23 a month. Sure, I'll miss out on the iPhone 18 for a year, but I'll get the iPhone 19 two years down the line. Over those two years, I'll spend $552 total, which is $247 less than buying the iPhone outright. Of course, you could argue that if I bought the iPhone for $799 upfront, I could sell it for around $400 after two years, making that a better deal—assuming I don't care about the device's condition. But I'm comparing this to the old upgrade plan, not the outright purchase option.

: LOL, first time seeing a lease more expensive than financing. Gotta hand it to Apple, they really know how to make money. With a lease, you'd probably have to buy AppleCare+ too, otherwise if it breaks, the repair costs are astronomical and you're forced to fix it since it's not your own device[吃瓜]

: Tip: In rental services like Apple Upgrade, ownership of the device is technically held by a third-party financial institution or Apple. Therefore, when returning the device for an upgrade, there are very strict requirements regarding its appearance and condition. If the phone has a cracked screen, broken back panel, or severe dents at the end of the lease term, a "Damage Fee" will apply: - **Without AppleCare+**: The return assessment agency (e.g., Klarna) will directly charge a hefty "compensation/repair deduction." - **With AppleCare+**: You only need to pay a minimal service fee (e.g., $29 for screen replacement, $99 for other damage) to smoothly complete the return and get a free upgrade. Official repairs are expensive, and third-party repairs can affect returns or exchanges. - **Not opting for official repair**: Without AppleCare+, going directly to Apple for an official repair—such as replacing an original screen or back cover on an iPhone Pro/Plus—can cost $200–$300+ each time. - **Choosing third-party repair**: If you go to a local shop for a non-original screen, the return inspection may detect non-genuine parts, leading to a "fail" status and potential fines. **Forced "Direct Buyout"**: If the damage is too severe and repairs are not cost-effective, you may ultimately be forced to pay off the remaining balance to buy out the damaged phone outright, defeating the original purpose of "leasing/regularly upgrading."

: Actually, it's pretty similar to the previous iPhone Upgrade Program, except AppleCare is no longer included. For people who upgrade their phone every year, this should be the most convenient option.
