Editor's Pick: The OM-3 clearly has the PEN-F written all over its face. Of course, I'm very fond of the PEN-F camera series with its legendary heritage that continued from film cameras. Now that Olympus has been reborn as OM System, will the OM-3 continue the legendary status of the PEN-F?

Design-wise, the OM-3 preserves the family appearance with the "battleship-style" viewfinder inherited from the OM-1, while avoiding the OM-1 Mark II's "massive muscles, passionate shooting" body that's even larger than full-frame cameras. The PEN-F inspired design combined with OM System's cutting-edge technology gives you an immediate urge to take it out for shooting as soon as you see the OM-3, which is a key element of a great camera.

The direct consequence of smartphones dominating photography is that the camera market has been greatly compressed, becoming an increasingly niche market. With powerful computing capabilities, the convenience brought by computational photography has turned the camera's traditional "tactile control" into "unnecessary complexity" in the computational photography era. Of course, I'm exaggerating a bit, but in an era where automatic mode is preferred over manual, even OM System, a representative of serious photography, needs to cater to the mainstream market to survive. With a more powerful processor, dedicated computational photography buttons, built-in multiple color profiles, and combinations of multiple dials and customizable shortcut keys, you can either shoot in auto mode or find the "tactile control" that photography enthusiasts crave.

Of course, spending $1999 on an M43 camera still requires courage, especially when the same budget can get you a full-frame mirrorless camera with a sensor two sizes larger and much more versatility. If you're not satisfied with smartphone photography and this is your first camera purchase, I absolutely do not recommend the OM-3. The Panasonic S52, Sony A74, Canon R62, and Nikon Z63 would all be better choices. However, if you already have plenty of cameras and you're just a grown-up looking for a new toy, buying the OM-3 for the PEN-F's design is perfectly reasonable.
