As for how to tell if it's an official store, you can call and ask. I'm not entirely sure how to distinguish either, but when I activated the line before, I happened to visit that store. Other stores charge an extra $10 fee per line, but that one doesn't, claiming it's because they're an official store. For this payoff, the first store I went to wasn't official either. I initially didn't pay much attention because I was concerned about contract issues. But two days ago, a Walmart employee clearly told me that I could pay it off and then unlock it—no contract required—so I went ahead and bought it.

I got the Verizon version, paid the tax upfront at the store, then went to a Verizon store the next day to pay off the device and cancel the line. Now, I'm just waiting for it to unlock in two months. Keeping the line for two months actually works out well—the employee gave me a $75/month plan discounted to $50/month, with the first month free, so it's effectively $50 for two months, just in time for the unlock. I didn’t keep the new number because I already have two lines.

From what I’ve researched and asked around, Verizon and AT&T have slightly different cancellation policies. With Verizon, you can pay off the device in cash at an official store within 14 days of activation; after 14 days, you can pay it off via the app. AT&T, on the other hand, allows payoff and cancellation the same day. If you cancel within three days of activation, you can get the activation fee refunded.

For AT&T phones, there seems to be a way to soft-unlock online after payoff, so you don’t have to wait. But I wanted the Ultra model, and after calling multiple stores, this was the only one that still had a Verizon Ultra in stock, so I went for it. 这个活动有段时间了，网页链接>>
之前担心合约问题，没有关注，前天在一个walmart店里，店员明确给我说可以pay off，之后解锁，没有合约，就买了。我买的verizon，当场付了税，第二天找verizon店铺pay off，然后cancel了号码，之后就是等着两月后解锁了。不过，保留两个月也挺好，店员给我$75/m的套餐优惠后$50/m，第一个月还免费，等于50用两个月，到时候正好解锁。我只是因为已经有两个号了，就没保留这个新的。
根据我查到的和问到的，verizon和att的cancel时间略有不同。verizon是开卡14天内，在官方店铺里现金pay off，14天后可以在APP里payoff。att好像是当天就可以payoff了。开卡三天内cancel，可以返还activate fee。
att的手机网上好像有软解的办法，payoff后，直接unlock，不用等。但我想买ultra，打了好多店铺的电话，只有这一家还有最后一台verizon的ultra，就买了。
