New Regulation Version NS2 Launches in Fall, Standard with Replaceable Battery

First-generation model to be discontinued in 2027

In response to the new EU battery regulations set to take effect in 2027, Nintendo has officially confirmed that it will launch a hardware revision in the European market. The core change of this revision is the introduction of a "user-replaceable battery" design. The promotional campaign will start this summer (2026) and continue until early 2027.

The new Switch 2 console is expected to launch in Europe in fall 2026. Although the removable battery feature has been added, some specifications have seen minor fluctuations. Among them, the battery capacity of the Pro controller has been reduced by approximately 16%, while the console's weight has increased due to structural adjustments.

The original Switch series is about to say goodbye in Europe. Nintendo has confirmed that older hardware, including the original Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED models, will cease production in 2026 and stop shipping to European retailers by mid-February 2027. Existing eShop and online services will not be affected in the short term.

This hardware revision is currently limited to the European market. Whether North America and other regions will follow with a similar "removable battery" solution remains to be officially announced. For users seeking maximum portability, the current launch edition remains attractive; while players who value battery life and long-term maintenance can keep an eye on the European revision's updates.
