Microsoft Withdraws Optional Policy, Windows 11 Will Force Install Copilot

June 22, 2026 - Microsoft has officially reversed its previous decision to give users control over AI choices. After pausing automatic installations in March of the same year, Microsoft 365 Copilot has now returned to the default installation list for Windows 11.

The core of this mandatory deployment is Microsoft 365 Copilot (formerly known as Office Hub). Microsoft uses the built-in Microsoft 365 Application updater to install it in the background without notifying users.

It's important to note that this Microsoft 365 Copilot app is not the regular Copilot chat app, but the renamed version of the original Microsoft 365 / Office Hub. It primarily integrates Microsoft 365 services with AI features. Simply put, it serves more as an entry point to Copilot within the Office ecosystem, rather than a standalone system chat assistant.

The controversy this time lies in Microsoft changing the default installation to require users or IT administrators to actively opt out. Without prior configuration, Microsoft 365 Copilot may automatically appear on devices through the Microsoft 365 Apps update mechanism. For regular users, this might just mean an extra app they may never use; but for company IT administrators, it means additional work in deployment, permissions, and management policies.
