Mitsubishi Urgently Recalls 108,000 SUVs Due to Risk of Sudden Tailgate Drop

Check VIN Recall

Mitsubishi has recently announced an expanded recall affecting over 108,000 SUVs across the United States. The recall is due to potential corrosion issues in the trunk door support components, which could cause the tailgate to suddenly fall when open, increasing the risk of injury.

Quick reference for affected models
▫️ 2014-2020 models Outlander
▫️ 2018-2022 models Outlander PHEV

⚠️ Core issue: Salt water may penetrate and accumulate inside the dust caps of the trunk springs, causing cylinder corrosion and thinning of the walls. This could lead to the gas springs (lift gate support struts) suddenly losing pressure, causing the heavy tailgate to unexpectedly slam down.

Mitsubishi initially issued a recall in August 2025 for "salt belt regions" where salt is heavily used for snow removal in winter. However, after receiving failure reports from non-salt belt regions, Mitsubishi decided to expand the recall nationwide in mid-April 2026. Currently, there are 4 known warranty claims related to this issue.

🛠️ Solution: Mitsubishi will replace free of charge a pair of enhanced spring support struts with improved corrosion resistance for affected vehicles. Vehicle owners are advised to watch for official notifications or contact their local dealerships.
