Editor's Pick: As a key part of Mercedes-Benz's "all-electric" strategy, the electric G-Class (also known as EQG) was once highly anticipated. Inheriting the classic G-Class's boxy design and off-road spirit, the EQG represents Mercedes-Benz's latest exploration in the luxury electric SUV market. However, reality has dealt Mercedes a heavy blow.

Data shows that since its launch, the EQG has sold only 1,450 units in the European market, a mere 61 units in the Korean market, and just 58 units in China. Even more shocking is the rumor that this vehicle has had zero sales in the US market to date, making its sales performance dismal at best. In stark contrast, the gasoline version of the G-Class continues to sell well, with seven times more sales than its all-electric counterpart, highlighting the electric G-Class's awkward position in the market.

Mercedes-Benz has invested considerable effort in developing the EQG. To maintain the rugged character of the G-Class while achieving all-electric propulsion, Mercedes significantly restructured the body, battery layout, and four-motor control system. It's reported that Mercedes developed a specialized platform variant for the EQG, supporting new features like "tank turn" capability, and equipped it with a battery pack exceeding 100kWh to meet the range requirements of a large SUV.

Mercedes-Benz executives have privately admitted that the electric G-Class has been a "Complete Flop." Analysts believe there are multiple reasons for the EQG's cold market reception. On one hand, its starting price of approximately 150,000 euros makes it prohibitively expensive for many potential customers. On the other hand, electric vehicle users have reservations about the range limitations caused by the "box-like" design and high wind resistance. Additionally, traditional G-Class consumers remain skeptical about electric drivetrains, while those who prefer electric vehicles may not necessarily be drawn to this traditional rugged design, resulting in an awkward market positioning.

Mercedes-Benz had previously announced that by 2030, it would achieve complete electrification "subject to market conditions." However, the market feedback for the EQG once again demonstrates the significant challenges traditional luxury car manufacturers face in product adaptation and consumer acceptance during their electric transition. Even a model like the G-Class, which symbolizes Mercedes-Benz's off-road heritage, may not necessarily continue its former glory in the electric era.

This reminds us of the similar situation faced by the Mercedes EQS when it was first launched, which ultimately led to its price being nearly halved, ironically sparking increased interest. With the current EQG priced at $160,000, would people be interested if the price was cut in half to $80,000?

: People who can afford this kind of car—do you really think they have time to just sit around waiting for it to charge? But yesterday, I actually saw a 580 on the road. I was thinking, since when do they have a 580 model?
