2025 Global Auto Sales Ranking: Toyota Tops Sales Charts for 6th Consecutive Year

Nissan Falls Out of Top 10

The automotive industry underwent a dramatic transformation in 2025, with electrification and export capabilities becoming decisive factors in rankings. As major automakers released their annual sales figures, let's review how global manufacturers performed. (Data sourced from official financial reports, with some Q4 data based on institutional estimates)

Quick summary:

2025 Global Automotive Sales TOP 10 (Automotive Groups/Companies)
Rank Automotive Group 2025 Sales (approx.) Highlights

1

Toyota Group

11.32 million vehicles

Ranked #1 globally for six consecutive years, with hybrid models performing exceptionally well.

2

Volkswagen Group

8.98 million vehicles

Despite pressure on Chinese sales, maintained second place through European market strength and EV transition.

3

Hyundai Motor Group

7.27 million vehicles

Continuously expanded market share in North America and Europe with both BEVs and hybrids.

4

General Motors

6.25 million vehicles

Stellantis

5.42 million vehicles

Houses 14 brands including Maserati and Jeep, but experienced decline in North American market.

6

BYD

4.60 million vehicles

Continuous growth in sales, with overseas sales surging 145%.

7

Ford

4.45 million vehicles

F-Series pickups remain strong, with the Pro commercial division generating substantial profits.

8

Geely Holding

4.12 million vehicles

Includes Volvo, Zeekr, etc. Achieved 26% year-on-year growth in 2025, with significant global expansion.

9

Honda

3.50 million vehicles

Global ranking fell from previous years due to impact of new energy transition in the Chinese market.

10

Suzuki

3.30 million vehicles

King of the Indian market, pushed Nissan out of the top ten.

  • NO.1 Toyota: 11.32 million vehicles ⬆️ (including Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Hino)

Toyota Group continues to hold the global leadership position with over 11.32 million vehicles, with growth primarily driven by the full explosion of "hybrid dividends." Against the backdrop of slowing global EV growth, Toyota's persistent HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) strategy has been highly successful in North American and European markets. High-profit models like the RAV4 and Corolla hybrids are in short supply, effectively offsetting Toyota's market share decline in China. Additionally, Toyota Group's massive scale benefits from contributions of its sub-brands, with Daihatsu (focused on affordable vehicles in Southeast Asia) and Hino (commercial vehicles) jointly establishing an unshakable foundation of millions of units.

  • NO.2 Volkswagen Group: approximately 8.98 million vehicles ⬇️ (including Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Jetta, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, etc.)

Although Volkswagen Group barely maintained its second-place position, sales of approximately 8.98 million vehicles indicate it's in a challenging strategic defensive period. Volkswagen's decline is primarily attributed to losing ground in the Chinese market, once its "profit cash cow," where its gasoline vehicles' market share has been continuously eroded while its ID. series electric vehicles underperformed expectations after being dragged into price wars. Notably, Volkswagen's global sales heavily depend on SAIC Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen, its two joint ventures in China. Excluding these approximately 3 million units of joint venture data would significantly reduce Volkswagen's global scale. Fortunately, its European home base remains solid, with the revival of PHEV models helping to stem further decline.

  • NO.3 Hyundai Group: 7.27 million vehicles ⬆️ (including Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, etc.)

Hyundai Kia Group was one of the most impressive traditional giants of 2025, securing third place with 7.27 million vehicles. Its unique success lies in achieving growth after successfully "de-Chinizing" - filling the gap created by essentially abandoning the Chinese market with explosive growth in the US and Indian markets. Hyundai, Kia, and the premium brand Genesis have won acclaim in European and American markets with excellent design and reliable hybrid/EV technology, proving that with strong product strength, global expansion can be achieved without relying on a single market.

  • NO.4 General Motors: approximately 6.25 million vehicles ⬆️ (including Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Wuling, etc.)

Ranking fourth with approximately 6.25 million vehicles, GM's sales structure displays a clear "dual-track" characteristic. On one hand, GM's profits primarily come from Chevrolet and GMC pickups and full-size SUVs in the US domestic market, which are the cornerstones of its financial health. On the other hand, its global sales ranking heavily depends on its Chinese joint venture - SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW). While affordable micro-cars like the Wuling Hongguang MINI generate minimal profit per vehicle, they contribute a massive base of approximately 1.5-1.8 million units. Without this "non-GM branded" joint venture volume, General Motors' ranking would directly fall out of the global top six.

  • NO.5 Stellantis: 5.42 million vehicles ⬇️ (including Jeep, Maserati, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Citroën, DS, etc.)

Stellantis experienced its darkest hour, with sales dropping to approximately 5.42 million vehicles. This giant conglomerate with 14 brands including Peugeot, Jeep, and Maserati faced multiple setbacks in 2025: In North America, Jeep and Ram were forced to halt production to clear inventory after pricing strategy failures led to serious stockpiles; in its European home market, its market share was aggressively challenged by Chinese electric vehicles. The lack of strong new energy vehicle hits and internal friction during the multi-brand integration process made it the company with the most obvious decline on the list.

  • NO.6 BYD: 4.60 million vehicles ⬆️ (including BYD, Yangwang, Denza, Fangchengbao, etc.)

BYD was the biggest dark horse in the global auto market in 2025, continuing to grow with a historic achievement of 4.60 million vehicles - all highly valuable "purely self-owned" sales. BYD's explosion is credited to its "technology democratization" strategy with DM-i super hybrid technology, achieving "cheaper electricity than gas." While devouring the joint venture gasoline vehicle market, its overseas export business also experienced a boom. Unlike other giants dependent on joint ventures, BYD's sales come almost entirely from the BYD main brand and self-operated brands like Fangchengbao and Yangwang. Its vertically integrated supply chain system gave it absolute initiative in price wars.

  • NO.7 Ford Group: approximately 4.45 million vehicles ⬆️ (including Ford, Lincoln, etc.)

Ford Motor ranked seventh with approximately 4.45 million vehicles, with its survival strategy being "commercial vehicles are king." Although Ford's passenger car business (such as sedans) continues to contract globally, and its electric vehicle division Model e is still losing money, its commercial vehicle division Ford Pro performed exceptionally well. The F-Series pickups and Transit vans not only contributed the vast majority of profits but also supported the volume base. Additionally, Ford's cooperation with JMC (Jiangling Motors) in China is crucial, with JMC-produced Ford-branded commercial vehicles and pickups playing an important role in the global supply chain.

  • NO.8 Geely Group: 4.12 million vehicles ⬆️ (including Volvo, Geely, Zeekr, Lynk & Co, Lotus, etc.)

Geely Holding showcased the image of "China's most successful globally-oriented automaker" with 4.12 million vehicles. Geely's growth stems from its highly successful "multi-brand synergy" strategy: Geely Galaxy series solidified the mass market, Zeekr established a foothold in the premium EV sector, while wholly-owned subsidiary Volvo contributed stable global luxury car sales. Additionally, Geely successfully entered and dominated the right-hand drive market in Southeast Asia by acquiring controlling stakes in Malaysia's Proton Cars. This model of capital and technology export has given Geely the true embryonic form of a multinational automotive group.

  • NO.9 Honda Group: 3.50 million vehicles ⬇️ (including Honda, Acura, etc.)

Honda Motor appeared to be struggling in 2025, with sales shrinking to 3.50 million vehicles. The main reason for its decline is the collapse of the Chinese market, where with the rapid decline in demand for gasoline vehicles, former legendary models like Accord and Civic lost their halos, and Honda lacked competitive pure electric products to retain customers. Currently, Honda is highly dependent on the US market, with the CR-V hybrid version becoming almost its only lifeline, making its global competitive position precarious due to this one-legged approach.

  • NO.10 Suzuki Group: 3.30 million vehicles ⬆️ (including Suzuki, etc.)

Suzuki Motor is a typical example of "making a fortune quietly," surpassing Nissan to enter the top ten with 3.30 million vehicles. Although Suzuki withdrew early from both Chinese and US markets, it bet big on the Indian market and achieved tremendous success. Through its subsidiary Maruti Suzuki, Suzuki monopolizes nearly 40% of the local market share. Combined with its deep cultivation of affordable, durable small cars in Africa and Southeast Asia, Suzuki has proven that without participating in the EV competition in China and the US, it can still thrive by focusing deeply on essential models for emerging markets.

Bonus:

  • Nissan Motor: approximately 3.20 million vehicles ⬇️

Nissan's absence from the top 10 is perhaps the most unbelievable for many, primarily for two reasons: 1. With the unbundling of its relationship with Renault, Nissan returned to independence in 2025, so sales were not calculated as an alliance. 2. Nissan's sales have declined dramatically, from a peak of 7 million vehicles when it could challenge Toyota to less than half that today, with a continuous downward trend and facing bankruptcy pressure.

  • Changan Automobile: 2.91 million vehicles ⬆️
  • Chery Holding: 2.80 million vehicles ⬆️
  • BMW Group: 2.46 million vehicles ⬇️
  • Renault Group: 2.33 million vehicles ⬆️
  • Mercedes-Benz: 2.16 million vehicles ⬇️
  • Tesla: 1.64 million vehicles ⬇️

Overall, this year's rankings haven't changed much from last year. The top three positions remain virtually unmovable, and no other automakers can challenge their positions. Among other manufacturers, only General Motors and Geely showed significant changes; GM's change is due to calculation methods, as previous years didn't include SAIC-Wuling's approximately 1.8 million units - without these, GM would be at about the same level as Ford. Geely's growth from just over 3 million units last year to 4 million this year is remarkable. Chinese manufacturers like Changan/Chery are rapidly catching up, and perhaps in the near future, we'll see three or even four Chinese automakers in the global top ten sales rankings.

: The combined market capitalization of the top PC manufacturers globally is still less than that of the company that makes the operating system. Similarly, no matter how many cars are sold, they are essentially laying the groundwork for future autonomous driving software companies.
